Summer Is Here, Sis — Is Your Hair Ready?

It's mid-June, the heat is officially on, and if your hair has been acting up lately, you're not imagining it. Humidity, sweat, sun, pool chlorine, salt water... summer throws a lot at your strands, and most of us don't adjust our routines until our hair is already protesting.

So let's fix that. Here's how to keep your hair (and your sanity) intact this season.

Humidity is not the enemy — your moisture balance is

If your curls are frizzing out by 10am or your edges are reverting before you even leave the house, that's usually a sign your hair is either under-moisturized or your products aren't sealing properly. Humidity doesn't create frizz out of nowhere. It just exposes what your hair was already missing.

This is the perfect time to revisit your LOC or LCO method and make sure you're actually sealing in moisture, not just layering product on top of dry hair. If you're not sure which method works better for your hair, that's literally a whole chapter in Healthy Hair First. Your porosity determines a lot of this.

Sweat is sneaky buildup

Between the heat, workouts, and just existing outside in summer, your scalp is producing more oil and sweat than usual. That means buildup happens faster, even if you're "being good" with your wash routine.

If your scalp feels itchy, your roots look greasy by day two, or your products aren't performing like they used to, it might be time for a clarifying wash. Not every week. Just when your hair is asking for it.

Protective styles are your best friend right now... but

Braids, twists, buns, wigs — all great for summer. But "protective" doesn't mean "ignore it for six weeks." Your scalp still needs attention. Dryness and buildup don't pause just because your hair is tucked away.

If you're in a protective style or wearing extensions/wigs this summer, make sure you're still moisturizing your scalp, especially along the edges and parts. This is one of the most overlooked parts of healthy hair care, and it's covered in detail in the journal section, because tracking what's happening underneath matters just as much as what you see on top.

Father's Day reminder: healthy hair habits start early

With Father's Day this weekend, I want to give a shoutout to the dads, granddads, and father figures out there doing their daughter's hair, learning new routines, and showing up for haircare in their own households. If that's you, or if you know someone like that, Healthy Hair First was written to be simple and practical enough for anyone to follow, not just longtime naturals.

Your June check-in

If you've been tracking your hair journey (or thinking about starting), now's a good time for a quick check-in:

  • How's your moisture holding up in this heat?

  • Is buildup creeping in faster than usual?

  • Are your protective styles actually protecting, or just hiding problems?

These are exactly the kinds of questions the Healthy Hair First journal helps you answer, because guessing isn't a strategy. Tracking is.

Bottom line

Summer hair struggles aren't random. They're information. Your hair is telling you what it needs, and the goal is just learning to listen.

If you want a deeper dive into moisture, porosity, protein balance, and how to actually track your progress instead of just hoping for the best, you can grab the paperback, e-book, or interactive journal here: payhip.com/melaninandmoss

Stay cool, stay moisturized, and I'll catch up with you next month.
